Peshawar bomb blast: Injured girls ask big questions

PESHAWAR: Unaware of the word terrorism and bomb blast, two minor girls, Ajira and Naghma, were injured in the Friday bomb blast at Firdaus Bazaar. The girls along with their aunty had gone there for Eid shopping, when the bomb went off at 5:14pm just before iftar.

“I came to the bazaar with my aunty to buy bangles and sandals for Eid,” said Ajira (6), laying at the hands of her father, Mumtaz Khan, at the Neuro Ward of the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH). Despite receiving serious injuries on her head, hands and legs, she was asking her father that where were the bangles and sandals she had bought for Eid.

The injured included five minors and several female vendors, who were selling different items at their makeshift stalls outside the Jinnah Park.

Next to Ajira was lying Naghma (7), a resident of Ittehad Colony Peshawar who had also come to the bazaar for shopping, was seriously injured in the bomb blast. Naghma said that she did not know why she injured so seriously and she was crying of injuries. Azattaullah, Naghma’s father said, “My daughter is questioning me time and again that who has injured her.” Besides the two girls, two other underage children were seriously injured in the bomb blast.

The girls’ fathers called the blast an inhuman act and the failure of the provincial government to protect lives of the people. After reading the news of the blast in newspapers and listening from others, several people visited the blast spot on Saturday. Ali Muhammad Jan Orakzai, the NWFP governor, feared involvement of foreign hands in the blast, while Akram Khan Durrani, the chief minister, termed it “a cowardly act”. staff report
